AmCham Ghana Hosts First Franchise Committee Meeting

The Chamber, on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, hosted the first AmCham Ghana Franchise Committee meeting at the secretariat.

Discussions were on helping franchisees secure funding and investment for their operations in the country. The committee members who are franchise holders also shared some of their challenges in doing business in Ghana and suggested measures that could help improve the business environment for franchisees.

The AmCham Ghana Franchise Committee is an AmCham Ghana initiative supported by the  U.S. Commercial Service in Ghana and chaired by Ashok Mohinani, Executive Director of Mohinani Group which also owns all the KFC franchises in Ghana. The committee’s membership includes executives from AVIS, FedEx, Interbrand Ghana, UPS, Orkin, Dominos Pizza, Burger King, and Original American Cola.

The franchise committee aims to help build a profitable franchise ecosystem in Ghana by promoting successful franchises and advocating for laws and policies that will improve the ease of doing business for franchisees.

Webinar: Accessing Co-Investment Opportunities and Exporting Under AGOA

The Chamber on June 16, 2020, collaborated with USAID and the West Africa Trade & Investment Hub to host a webinar to discuss the Trade Hub’s Co-Investment Opportunities and how companies can take advantage and export to the United States under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The event forms part of the ongoing AmCham Money Series.

AmCham Ghana Executive Secretary, Simon Madjie, reiterated the chamber’s commitment to assisting companies in doing business and help provide vital information to mitigate the impact of the new coronavirus.

The Trade Hub is a five-year trade and investment facilitation program that seeks to improve private sector competitiveness in West Africa through its $60 million Co-Investment Fund.

The program makes it possible for applicants to access grant funding from $250,000 to $2 million.  In Ghana currently, there is $8.5 million of grant funding (approx. 48.7 million Cedi) available for companies interested in co-partnering with the Trade Hub to generate new private investment, create jobs, and increase exports.

The aim is to co-invest in activities that contribute to; creating new jobs, generating high levels of private investment, increasing the value of exports and/or sales, empowering women and the youth, and introducing innovations to modernize agriculture.

Private sector companies, research institutions, universities, and non-profit/for-profit organizations looking to grow and upgrade their businesses, expand corporate social responsibility projects, or conduct research and development activities to pursue market and technological innovations in the agriculture sector can apply.

In addition to its co-investment partnerships, the Trade Hub also provides technical assistance to businesses so they can benefit from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). AGOA was established to promote increased trade and investment between the U.S. and sub-Saharan African countries resulting in significant growth in total two-way trade between Sub-Saharan African countries and the United States.

AGOA/GSP represents  23% of total US-bound duty-free exports from AGOA beneficiaries and currently, Ghana is the 4th leading exporter.

The Trade Hub can assist companies in the eligibility process to export under AGOA, and also facilitates access to U.S. buyers for interested companies. Click to Download Presentation

U.S. – Ghana Digital Forum

AmCham Ghana, on Monday, March 2, held the U.S. – Ghana Digital Forum on the theme; Securing Ghana’s Cyberspace for Future Digital Growth.

The forum was an AmCham IT committee meeting with government agencies and other stakeholders to gain a better understanding of each other’s activities and perspectives in securing the country’s cyberspace.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister for Communications, Vincent Sowah Odotie (MP), shared some policies and programs that are being implemented by the government of Ghana to build a resilient and robust digital ecosystem.

He mentioned the government’s efforts in fighting cybercrime through capacity building in the judiciary, and the development of the country’s incident response capabilities with the establishment of the National Computer Emergency Response Team at the National Cyber Security Centre.

“Ghana has also ratified two international conventions namely the African Union Convention on Cybersecurity and Data Protection (Malabo Convention), and the Convention on Cybercrime (Budapest Convention), making her the 5th country to ratify to both treaties,” Hon. Odotie added.

Other speakers at the event included AmCham Ghana President, Ayesha Bedwei, and the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie S. Sullivan, who stressed the importance of developing new habits to deal with cyber threats.

The forum also featured a panel discussion on the Cyber Security Bill, fake news, the role of data privacy/protection in securing communication and data storage, the state of the nation’s connectivity infrastructure, and the government’s initiative to establish Ghana as a leader in ICT innovation in the sub-region by 2023.

The panel was made up of Mr. Owusu Bediako-Poku, Director of Operations at the National Cyber Security Centre, Mr. Kwaku Kyei Ofori, Deputy Director-General at the National Information Technology Agency, and Prof. Kwaku Appiah-Adu, Head of the Delivery Unit, Office of the Vice President.

The session was moderated by Franklin Asare, Country Director at Oracle / AmCham IT Committee Chairman.

Also present at the forum were executives from VISA, Uber, PwC, IBM, Emergent Technology, National Information Technology Agency, KPMG, Oracle Corporation, American Tower Corporation, National Cyber Security Centre, Office of the Vice President, the Bank of Ghana, and representatives from other AmCham member companies.

AmCham Ghana President Meets Pamela Ward, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs & Regional Commercial Officer Sub-Saharan Africa

AmCham Ghana President, Joe Mensah, met with Pamela Ward, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs & Regional Commercial Officer Sub-Saharan Africa.

They discussed improving America’s involvement in the development of Ghana and means to further improve direct trade between the two nations by making it easier for traders and supplier to source directly from the United States.

Also discussed at the meeting was making investing in Ghana attractive to the diaspora.  According to Joe Mensah, the diaspora must get involved. “We all need to engage, and when we find something wrong, we all find means to solve it.” He added.

The President of the chamber also shared with Pamela Ward,  some of the chamber’s advocacy activities aimed at policy formulation and change to improve the business climate in Ghana.

Pamela Ward has over twenty years of experience supporting U.S. business in international markets as a Foreign Commercial Officer for the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Also present at the meeting were AmCham Ghana Executive Secretary, Simon Madjie, and Hannah Kamenetsky, Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy Accra.

AmCham Ghana Business Reception With 2019 African Green Revolution Forum Delegates

AmCham Ghana, under the auspices of the U.S. Ambassador and the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, hosted selected delegates of the just ended 2019 African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) for a business reception.

The reception which was hosted at the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana allowed AmCham Ghana members to interact with the selected delegates, share ideas and establish relations for possible future collaborations.

The AGRF is considered the world’s most important and impactful forum for African agriculture, pulling together stakeholders in the agricultural landscape to take practical actions and share lessons that will move African agriculture forward.

Since the first AGRF was held in Ghana in 2010, the Forum has annually brought together Heads of State, Ministers, business leaders, development partner leadership, researchers, thought leaders, farmer organization representatives, youth entrepreneurs, and other critical stakeholders to focus on the actions and policies needed to move the continental agenda forward.

AmCham Ghana Hosts Governor Of Mississippi, Phil Bryant For A Dinner Reception

The Chamber on August 15, 2019, hosted the visiting Governor of Mississippi, Phil Bryant and his trade delegation for a Dinner Reception in Accra. The event was to allow the Governor to meet with AmCham Ghana Executives and business leaders for a discussion on possible business collaborations.

Governor Bryant is in Ghana to expand and promote trade and investment opportunities between Mississippi and Ghana. During his remarks, he said, a lot of investors based in Mississipi are interested in doing business in Ghana, the reason for which he is in the country to build an economic and investment bridge to facilitate future trade.

AmCham Ghana President, Joe Mensah, welcomed the Governor and his delegation. He shared with them some activities that the Chamber was engaged in and assured the Governor that Ghana is the best place to do business on the continent.

The Governor also visited AmCham member, Strategic Security Systems Limited, a solar panel assembly plant in Kpone in the Greater Accra Region, where he saw first-hand the positive effects of U.S. Government’s engagement in facilitating bilateral trade and investment ties under the Power Africa program through the U.S. Trade and Development Agency.

AmCham Ghana Business Breakfast With National Black MBA Association

The American Chamber of Commerce, Ghana on Friday, February 22, 2019, hosted members of the National Black MBA Association(NBMBAA) for a Business Breakfast engagement at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra. The event was organized in collaboration with the Ghana International Chamber of Commerce.

The National Black MBA Association is in Ghana for their 2nd  annual trade mission excursion. This Mission is to expose African Americans to the current African culture and the various investment opportunities across the continent; consequently potentially diversifying and growing their investment portfolios.

President of the Chamber, Joe Mensah in his opening remarks shared his experience when he returned home from the United States to open an IBM office in Ghana. He also said out of an experience, the agricultural sector is a viable business sector to invest in. He encouraged members of the National Black MBA Association to consider investing in that sector.

Jese Tyson, the President of the NBMBAA said throughout the trip, participants were exposed to the culture and life in both countries through guided activities, along with an opportunity for participants to give back. He added that their ongoing commitment to promote bilateral trade relationships have seen the association assist companies in finding overseas partners, license technology and aid in international growth.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Yofi Grant, who was also a speaker at the event encouraged the diaspora business community to take advantage of Ghana’s stable socioeconomic and competitive environment to partner their Ghanaian counterparts.

He added that members of the NBMBAA have come at a very instructive time, where the country has position itself to lead the economic emancipation of the continent of Africa.

The African American community is estimated to have a collective buying power of $1.3 trillion. This Matilda Arhin, the President of the Ghana International Chamber of Commerce believes can be leveraged to drive development on the African Continent.

“Every year the members spend $400 million on tourism, hence if these people are invited to return home, some for holidays and others to invest it will greatly improve on the sector,” she added.
