AmCham Ghana Holds Luncheon Meeting With The Mayor Of Houston And Trade Delegation

The American Chamber of Commerce, Ghana, in partnership with the Ghana-Houston Chamber of Commerce, on Monday, July 24, 2023, held a luncheon meeting with the visiting mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Kobina T. Hammond, Chamber members and the 30-member business delegation from Houston to explore business opportunities to expand the existing trade relations between the U.S. city and Ghana.

The event, which was held under the theme, Developing the Ghana – Houston Partnership for Economic Growth, featured remarks from the Minister of Trade and Industry and Mayor of Houston, and afforded members the opportunity to interact with business leaders from the U.S. to establish new business relations to build on the existing $293 million trade between Ghana and the city of Houston.

Highlighting the essence of a mutually beneficial partnership, Mayor Turner emphasized that the envisioned trade engagement should stand as a paradigm of reciprocity, with both sides reaping mutual benefits. Echoing a sentiment of shared prosperity, he noted the need to establish enduring relationships that transcend short-term gains.

The Mayor shared his vision to explore collaboration in the domain of tourism. Recognizing the growing influx of American visitors to Ghana, he underscored the prospects of this burgeoning sector.

The Minister of Trade, during his remarks, touted Ghana’s peaceful political climate as a conducive environment for business to thrive, adding that “we have the platform, so we invite all investors to come and invest here.

“We in Ghana pride ourselves on being the best that Africa can put on exhibition, we have the best ambiance to do business, the human resource capacity, and appropriate legislature, and we have put together the best that any investor will be happy to have,” the minister added.

Houston has a GDP of $462 billion and stands poised to capitalize on Ghana’s growing economy for mutual benefits. This luncheon marked a pivotal moment in charting a new trajectory of growth and prosperity.
