Continuing our member engagement in the Tema Free Zones Enclave, the American Chamber of Commerce in Ghana Secretariat, led by our Chief Executive Officer, Doris Afanydey, visited Bunge Loders Croklaan to see how Ghanaian shea is processed for food manufacturers around the world.
On Tuesday, 27 October 2026, the American Chamber of Commerce in Ghana Secretariat, led by Chief Executive Officer Doris Afanydey, with Jane Okyere-Aduachie, and Albert Ludwig Nortey Botchway, visited Bunge Loders Croklaan in the Tema Free Zones Enclave. We were hosted by and the Bunge Loders Croklaan team, who took us through the plant and its operations.
Bunge Loders Croklaan is the specialty oils and fats business of Bunge, the United States agribusiness and food company. Its Tema facility, operating since 2019, is the company’s first shea processing plant in Africa and, by its own account, the largest of its kind on the continent. Shea nuts are crushed into raw butter, which the plant then refines into shea olein and shea stearin. The stearin travels to group facilities in the Netherlands, Malaysia, the United States and Canada, where it becomes ingredients for chocolate, confectionery and bakery products sold worldwide.
It is a clear example of value addition happening in Ghana, linking shea collectors in the north of the country and the wider region to global food supply chains.
Our conversation also covered the operating environment for exporters in the Free Zone, including logistics around the enclave and the regional supply of raw shea. The Chamber will carry these insights into its ongoing engagement with the Ghana Free Zones Authority and other relevant agencies.
“Everything we process here starts with shea collected in our communities, and ends up in products enjoyed around the world.” — Zachariah Adomako, Bunge Loders Croklaan
We thank the Bunge Loders Croklaan team for welcoming us.
